Since starting college, I've become much more aware of the number of material possessions that I own. It probably has something to do with having to haul half of them to school and back every year. At the same time, I've become way more aware of how many of them I actually use and how many I don't. Most of it fell into the second category. I had upwards of 50 t-shirts and I wore maybe 20 of them regularly. It was time to do something about all this clutter.
When I got home this spring, before I even unpacked, I started going through what I'd left at home. These were obviously the things I used the least. Within a week I had three bags of clothing to donate. Of course I kept a couple of shirts for nostalgia's sake. It felt so great to be getting rid of these clothes and giving them a second life with someone who would really benefit from them. Shirts, pants, jackets, it all went in a bag and then into a donation box. Old toys and stuffed animals were a different story. These I sold at a good old-fashioned yard sale. They would make some other kid happy and I made a couple bucks. The one thing I will never give up though is a book. Aside from those kiddie books I read in grammar school, I have kept every book I've ever bought or received. There are books lining the walls in my room and I wouldn't have it any other way. I love having this treasure trove of knowledge and adventure at my finger tips.
